Cenotes are sinkholes basis. In the Yucatan peninsula, they usually caves that have become flooded causing the roof to collapse, which often reveals the almost perfectly circular hole in the sky above the animals and giving people easy access to the water below.

What about water? Cenotes are not only filled with fresh water, they are full of rainwater that filters through surrounding vapnenačkim.Rezultat water is so clear, it seems impossible. Yes, you can clearly see all the way to the bottom of the cenote (except for those that are 500 meters deep), but also you can not see anything swimming in the water (people, fish, turtles) with amazing (and somewhat scary) clarity.

As we said, water in the cenote is a hyper-clear-so clear that when you dive into it sometimes seems like the air, not water. It is also very dark once you swim back to the cenote chambers, the last places where the roof collapsed, leaking light. And a little claustrophobic.
